12 Gauge is a 12-year-old sorrel John mule standing 14 hands tall, and he’s got the kind of résumé, handle, and personality that make him a pretty exceptional individual. Before 12 Gauge ever became someone’s pleasure-riding mule, he was earning his keep in the mountains. He’s spent extensive time hunting mountain lions and hogs, packing elk out of rugged backcountry, and traveling through country where having a dependable animal underneath you isn’t a luxury — it’s a necessity. He’s learned to navigate steep mountainsides, rocky trails, and challenging terrain with confidence and sure-footedness. He’s also put in his time on the ranch, working cattle and dragging calves to the branding fire. You simply cannot manufacture that kind of experience. It takes years, miles, and the right mind to begin with. These days, we’ve had the pleasure of enjoying 12 Gauge on some of the prettiest trails Texas has to offer. From the state parks to the hills surrounding Lake Texoma, he’s proven to be the kind of mule that makes you want to stay in the saddle just a little longer. Water, bridges, fallen timber, steep climbs, and winding trails are all taken in stride. He’s confident in unfamiliar country and willing to go wherever you point him. We’ve even taken him right through the heart of the historic Fort Worth Stockyards. Traffic, crowds, music, commotion, and the constant activity of the city didn’t keep him from going about his business. But here’s what makes 12 Gauge especially interesting. Underneath all that mountain and ranch experience is a mule with a handle that belongs on something considerably fancier than your average trail mount. He’s one-handed broke, has an excellent neck rein, spins beautifully in either direction, and has a big, impressive stop. He’ll walk, trot, and lope smooth, collected circles with a feel that makes him an absolute pleasure to ride. He’s got the kind of training and responsiveness that you’d be proud to show off, yet he’s practical enough to saddle up the following morning and spend the entire day outside. There’s no choosing between a fancy mule and a useful mule with this one. 12 Gauge is both. And for all the impressive things he’s done under saddle, he might be even more enjoyable when you’re standing beside him. He’s the first one waiting at the pasture gate, always happy to see you and never too busy to ask for a little attention. He’s affectionate, personable, and has that wonderful disposition that makes an animal more than just something you ride. He’s the kind you find yourself spending extra time with simply because you enjoy his company. Want to catch him out of the pasture, swing up bareback, and take an evening ride? That’s the kind of mule he is. He stands quietly for saddling, bathing, clipping, and the farrier. He ties patiently, loads and hauls beautifully, and has been an absolute pleasure to have in our barn. He’s located at our facility in Whitesboro, Texas.
