A HD MR PICKLES

2016 AQHA Blue Roan Gelding • 14.3 Hands

Some horses are made for one kind of rider or one kind of job. Pickles has enough miles behind him, enough training underneath him, and a gentle enough nature that he can be enjoyed in a whole lot of different ways.

A HD MR PICKLES, affectionately known as Pickles, is a registered AQHA blue roan gelding standing 14.3 hands. He has that traditional Quarter Horse look from nose to tail—a beautiful head, kind eye, good bone, plenty of body, and a balanced build that looks right whether he is standing at the hitching rail or saddled for the day.

And while his blue roan color certainly doesn’t hurt, the best parts of Pickles show up once you get in the saddle.

He is a genuinely broke horse. Pickles will walk, trot, and lope on a loose rein without needing someone constantly holding or helping him. He carries himself comfortably, picks up his leads, and has an easy way of traveling that makes him enjoyable to spend time on.

He neck reins, understands leg pressure well, and moves willingly when you ask. Ask him to turn around and he will come around smoothly; sit down and ask for his stop and he comes back to you with ease. His cues make sense, and you don’t have to work hard to get the response you’re looking for.

Pickles also has something that can’t be taught overnight—experience.

He has been used on the ranch, worked around cattle, and roped on. He understands having a job in front of him and is comfortable spending a day outside the arena. Open country and cattle aren’t something he was introduced to last week for a sales video; they are part of what he knows.

When the ranch work is finished, he is just as enjoyable pointed down a trail.

Pickles is a particularly good trail navigator. He pays attention to the country ahead of him, takes his time when the footing calls for it, and knows how to place his feet. He will work his way through rocks and brush, cross water, step over logs, climb and descend hills, and negotiate narrow trails. He doesn’t need every step mapped out for him by his rider.

That makes a big difference when you want to spend the day looking at the scenery instead of managing your horse.

We have also put Pickles through the things we like our horses to be comfortable with. He handles flags, tarps, bridges, and different obstacles with a willing attitude. You can expose him to commotion and ask him to work through something without having to make a big production out of it.

But if we had to choose one quality that really makes Pickles appealing, it would be his gentle nature.

He is the type of horse that can have plenty of education without making a less experienced rider feel like they have too much horse underneath them. He is safe and suitable for all levels of riders, yet he has enough handle and ability that an experienced rider can climb on, use his buttons, and thoroughly enjoy him too.

That combination is important. A horse can be pretty. A horse can be broke. A horse can have ranch experience. But when you put gentle, broke, useful, experienced, and good-looking together in the same gelding, you have something that is much easier to appreciate.

Pickles is also AQHA registered, with a pedigree carrying recognizable names including Hancocks Blue Boy, Valentines Blue, Gooseberry Blue, and Poco Peppy Doc.

He could spend his next chapter ranching and roping, carrying someone through miles of backcountry, tackling trail obstacles, or simply being the horse you look forward to saddling when you have an afternoon free.

You don’t have to decide which one with Pickles.

He already knows how to do a little bit of everything.
